The retail behemoth announced on Monday that Kevin Systrom, CEO and co-founder of Instagram, will join its board effective immediately. 30-year-old Systrom, who sold his popular photo-sharing app to Facebook for $1 billion in August 2012, becomes the youngest member of Wal-Mart’s board.
It’s interesting to watch companies engage outside help to reinvent themselves. This is a smart move by Wal-Mart. They are a huge company with a dominant brick-and-mortar presence that can only be enhanced by improving their digital storefronts.
Side note: I had no idea Marissa Mayer was on Wal-Mart’s board.
